Banking and finance
Counter jobs are shrinking fast; fintech, risk and advisory roles are where banking is heading.
What the job is
Banking and finance covers many jobs: bank officers who manage branches, loans and customers; analysts who study companies and markets; risk and compliance teams; and fintech engineers who build digital payment and lending systems.
O*NET's task list for financial and investment analysts includes analysing the financial performance of companies, advising clients on raising or restructuring debt, and preparing client presentations.
How AI is changing it
Routine counter work, data entry and standard reports are being automated quickly. In India, digital payments have already changed what a branch does.
Judging credit risk for a real business, building trust with customers, handling complaints and complex cases, and checking that automated systems are fair and compliant remain human work.
AI-resistance outlook
ChangingChanging with AI
This field is being reshaped more than most. Clerical and analytical tasks are highly exposed, but new technology roles are among the fastest-growing jobs.
What "Changing" means here: A large share of today's tasks is exposed to generative AI, so the job is being reshaped. Demand may still grow, but the skills that get hired are shifting.
Why we say this
- The WEF lists Bank Tellers and Related Clerks among the 15 fastest-declining jobs to 2030, and FinTech Engineers among the 15 fastest-growing. Source: World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025, Figure 2.2.
- The ILO's 2025 index places Financial Analysts in Gradient 4, its most exposed group, and Bank Tellers and Financial and Investment Advisers in Gradient 3. Source: ILO Working Paper 140, Generative AI and Jobs: A Refined Global Index of Occupational Exposure (2025), Table A1.
- The ILO also recalls that when ATMs automated cash withdrawals, banks opened more branches and tellers moved towards customer service and advisory tasks. It expects tasks in these jobs to evolve rather than stay static. Source: ILO Working Paper 140, Generative AI and Jobs: A Refined Global Index of Occupational Exposure (2025), Section 9.

Who tends to enjoy this work
O*NET gives financial and investment analysts the interest code CEI:
- Conventional: organised work with data, records and clear procedures.
- Enterprising: leading, persuading and starting things.
- Investigative: working with ideas, research and problems that need thinking through.
These are O*NET's Holland interest types for the occupation, from its Financial and Investment Analysts page. DharmaCode's own quiz and report do not use this test.

Ask the DharmaCode Agent
Questions parents ask about this career. These answers were written in advance by the DharmaCode team in the voice of a DharmaCode Agent. They are not generated live.
- Are bank jobs still a safe choice?
- DharmaCode AgentNo job is fully safe, and banking is changing more than most. The WEF expects bank teller jobs to fall fast, while fintech roles grow. Officer roles that involve customers, credit judgement and compliance are likely to change rather than vanish.
- Should my child aim for a bank PO exam or a finance degree?
- DharmaCode AgentBank exams come after graduation, so the degree comes first. A degree in commerce, economics, statistics or engineering keeps both options open: public sector banking and private finance or fintech.
- What is fintech, and how does a student get there?
- DharmaCode AgentFintech is technology for payments, lending, investing and insurance. Students usually reach it through computer science, data or finance degrees with programming skills.
- Which skills will still matter in an AI-heavy bank?
- DharmaCode AgentJudging risk in messy real cases, explaining products honestly, spotting fraud, and making sure automated decisions are fair. These need people.
- Is the ATM story relevant today?
- DharmaCode AgentThe ILO uses it as an example: ATMs automated cash withdrawals, yet tellers moved towards customer service and advice. It suggests jobs often change shape when technology arrives, though not always, and not without disruption.
A lesson from the texts
"Your business is with action alone; not by any means with fruit. Let not the fruit of action be your motive (to action). Let not your attachment be (fixed) on inaction."
Markets and bank exams both test whether you can do the work well while the result is out of your hands. The Gita's line on action without attachment to the fruit is a steady guide for both.
