Future-proof careers
Twenty careers Indian families ask us about, from doctor and electrician to software engineer and banker. For each: what the job is, how AI is changing it, an honest outlook backed by named sources, the Indian exams and paths, and the skills to start building in Class 9 to 12.
How to read the outlook labels
- High AI-resistanceMost of the core work needs a person present, human judgement or trust, and the sources we checked show low exposure to generative AI. AI will still change parts of the job.
- Medium AI-resistanceAI can already help with a fair share of the work, but the core of judgement, responsibility or hands-on craft stays with people.
- Changing with AIA large share of today's tasks is exposed to generative AI, so the job is being reshaped. Demand may still grow, but the skills that get hired are shifting.
No label is a promise. We base each one on the WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025, the ILO's 2025 generative AI exposure index, O*NET task data and, for technology roles, Nasscom. Each career page shows exactly which claim comes from which source.
Health and care
- DoctorHigh AI-resistanceDiagnosis, treatment and trust. AI is becoming a tool in the clinic, not the person in the white coat.
- NurseHigh AI-resistanceHands-on care that the WEF expects to be one of the largest-growing jobs to 2030.
- PsychologistHigh AI-resistanceHelping people understand their minds. The relationship is the treatment, and that stays human.
- PharmacistMedium AI-resistanceThe medicines expert on the care team. Software checks more; the pharmacist still answers for the advice.
- PhysiotherapistHigh AI-resistanceHands-on recovery work for injuries, surgery and long-term conditions. The hands are the job.
Engineering and building
- ElectricianHigh AI-resistanceSkilled hands-on work in homes, factories, solar and EV charging. Very little of it can be done by a chatbot.
- Civil engineerHigh AI-resistanceRoads, bridges, water and buildings. Software designs faster; someone still has to stand on site and sign off.
- Mechanical engineerHigh AI-resistanceMachines, vehicles, robots and factories. Simulation gets smarter; physical products still need engineers.
- ArchitectMedium AI-resistanceDesigning spaces people live and work in. AI makes images fast; clients, sites and approvals still need an architect.
Law, money and business
- LawyerMedium AI-resistanceAdvice, argument and responsibility. AI does more research and drafting, which raises the bar for young lawyers.
- Chartered accountantChanging with AIAudit, tax and financial judgement. Routine bookkeeping is shrinking fast; advice and assurance are not.
- Banking and financeChanging with AICounter jobs are shrinking fast; fintech, risk and advisory roles are where banking is heading.
- EntrepreneurMedium AI-resistanceStarting and running a business. AI lowers the cost of starting; the risk and judgement stay with the founder.
Technology and data
- Software engineerChanging with AIStill one of the fastest-growing jobs, and one of the most reshaped by AI. The work is moving from typing code to designing and checking systems.
- Data analystChanging with AITurning numbers into decisions. Data roles are growing fast, and AI is automating much of the routine analysis.
Creative and media
- DesignerMedium AI-resistanceProduct, UX and communication design. Some design work is growing fast; some is being automated. Which kind matters.
- Marketing professionalChanging with AIUnderstanding customers and telling them a true story. AI writes the first draft; strategy and taste decide what ships.
- JournalistChanging with AIFinding out what is true and telling people. AI writes summaries; reporting from the ground is still human work.
Teaching and hospitality
