Journalist
Finding out what is true and telling people. AI writes summaries; reporting from the ground is still human work.
What the job is
Journalists find, check and tell stories about what is happening: in politics, business, sport, science, cities and villages. They work for newspapers, TV, digital outlets, podcasts and as independent reporters.
O*NET's task list for news analysts, reporters and journalists includes gathering information through research, interviews and observation, building relationships with credible sources, and investigating breaking news.
How AI is changing it
AI can summarise reports, transcribe interviews, translate and draft routine news quickly. It can also produce false or invented text, which makes verification more important.
Going to the place, earning a source's trust, asking the hard question and checking facts before publishing are human work. Journalists who do original reporting stand apart from automated content.
AI-resistance outlook
ChangingChanging with AI
A significant share of a journalist's tasks is exposed to generative AI, so the job is being reshaped. Original reporting and verification are what keep it valuable.
What "Changing" means here: A large share of today's tasks is exposed to generative AI, so the job is being reshaped. Demand may still grow, but the skills that get hired are shifting.
Why we say this
- The ILO's 2025 index places Journalists in Gradient 3, where a significant portion of tasks are consistently exposed to generative AI. Source: ILO Working Paper 140, Generative AI and Jobs: A Refined Global Index of Occupational Exposure (2025), Table A1.
- The WEF's job outlook still shows projected net growth for Media and Communication Workers to 2030. Source: World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025, Figure 2.3.
- O*NET's task list stresses interviews, observation, source relationships and investigation, which depend on a person in the field. Source: O*NET OnLine, News Analysts, Reporters, and Journalists (27-3023.00).

Who tends to enjoy this work
O*NET gives news analysts, reporters, and journalists the interest code AIE:
- Artistic: creating, designing and expressing ideas.
- Investigative: working with ideas, research and problems that need thinking through.
- Enterprising: leading, persuading and starting things.
These are O*NET's Holland interest types for the occupation, from its News Analysts, Reporters, and Journalists page. DharmaCode's own quiz and report do not use this test.
Closest DharmaCode pattern: The Storyteller.

Ask the DharmaCode Agent
Questions parents ask about this career. These answers were written in advance by the DharmaCode team in the voice of a DharmaCode Agent. They are not generated live.
- Will AI replace journalists?
- DharmaCode AgentAI is already writing routine summaries, and the ILO finds a significant share of journalists' tasks exposed. Original reporting, interviews and verification are harder to automate, and in a world full of AI text, trusted reporting may matter more.
- Is journalism a stable career in India?
- DharmaCode AgentMedia is a competitive field with uneven pay, and we did not find a source to put numbers on that. It suits a child who is driven by curiosity and is willing to build skills and a portfolio steadily.
- Which stream is best?
- DharmaCode AgentAny stream. Humanities helps with writing and context; science or commerce can lead to specialist reporting on health, technology or business.
- What can my child do now?
- DharmaCode AgentWrite for the school magazine, start a simple blog or newsletter on a topic they love, and practise interviewing people. Publishing regularly is the best training.
- How can a young journalist use AI responsibly?
- DharmaCode AgentFor transcription, translation and research leads, always checking every fact before it is published. Never present AI text as one's own reporting.
A lesson from the texts
"This Sanjaya, O king, will describe the battle to thee. Nothing in the whole battle will be beyond this one's eyes."
The whole Kurukshetra war reaches us through Sanjaya, given the gift of seeing everything on the field. A journalist's duty is the same: to see clearly and report what is actually there.
