Civil engineer
Roads, bridges, water and buildings. Software designs faster; someone still has to stand on site and sign off.
What the job is
Civil engineers plan, design and build infrastructure: roads, bridges, metros, dams, water supply, drainage and buildings. They work for construction firms, consultancies and government departments.
O*NET's task list for civil engineers includes managing construction at the project site, inspecting sites for safety and design compliance, and computing loads and material stresses.
How AI is changing it
Design and simulation software is getting smarter, and AI can produce drafts, check drawings and estimate quantities quickly.
Site conditions, soil, weather, safety, contractors and public approvals are messy and local. Engineers who can manage that, and who take responsibility for a structure, stay central.
AI-resistance outlook
HighHigh AI-resistance
The ILO finds civil engineers among the least exposed occupations, and the WEF projects net growth for the role. Design tools will change, but site work and responsibility will not move to software.
What "High" means here: Most of the core work needs a person present, human judgement or trust, and the sources we checked show low exposure to generative AI. AI will still change parts of the job.
Why we say this
- The ILO's 2025 index places Civil Engineers in its 'Not Exposed' group. Source: ILO Working Paper 140, Generative AI and Jobs: A Refined Global Index of Occupational Exposure (2025), Table A1.
- The WEF's job outlook shows projected net growth for Civil Engineers to 2030. Source: World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025, Figure 2.3.

Skills to build in school
- Physics and mathematics (PCM in Class 11 and 12).
- Drawing and visualising in three dimensions.
- Working outdoors and with many kinds of people.
- Basic computer-aided design, which many students can start with free tools.
- Writing clear reports.
Exams and paths in India
JEE Main
For B.Tech or B.E. in civil engineering at NITs, IIITs and many other colleges.
Official site: jeemain.nta.nic.in
JEE Advanced
For admission to the IITs, taken by students who qualify through JEE Main.
Official site: jeeadv.ac.in
State tests and diplomas
Most states run their own engineering entrance tests. A polytechnic diploma after Class 10 is another route, with lateral entry into a degree later.
Rules, dates and eligibility change every year. Always check the official site before applying.
Who tends to enjoy this work
O*NET gives civil engineers the interest code RIC:
- Realistic: hands-on work with tools, machines or the physical world.
- Investigative: working with ideas, research and problems that need thinking through.
- Conventional: organised work with data, records and clear procedures.
These are O*NET's Holland interest types for the occupation, from its Civil Engineers page. DharmaCode's own quiz and report do not use this test.

Ask the DharmaCode Agent
Questions parents ask about this career. These answers were written in advance by the DharmaCode team in the voice of a DharmaCode Agent. They are not generated live.
- Is civil engineering still a good branch, compared with computer science?
- DharmaCode AgentThey suit different children. The ILO places civil engineers in its 'Not Exposed' group and software developers in a much more exposed gradient. Choose the branch your child is curious about, not only the one with the highest cut-off.
- Will AI design buildings and bridges by itself?
- DharmaCode AgentSoftware will do more of the drafting and calculation. A qualified engineer still has to check the design against the real site and take responsibility for safety.
- My child does not get into an IIT. Is it still worth it?
- DharmaCode AgentYes. Many good civil engineers come from NITs, state colleges and diploma routes. Practical site experience and internships matter a great deal in this field.
- What can my child do at school?
- DharmaCode AgentKeep mathematics and physics strong, build models, and try free design software. Visiting a construction site with a family friend can show whether the work appeals.
- Is the job only outdoors?
- DharmaCode AgentNo. There are design office, planning and project management roles too, though most careers include some site work.
A lesson from the texts
"One's duty, though defective, is better than another's duty well performed. Performing the duty prescribed by nature, one does not incur sin."
Some children are made for building things that last. The Gita calls such work 'the duty prescribed by nature'. If your child is happiest with blocks, maps and models, that is worth taking seriously.
