Mechanical engineer
Machines, vehicles, robots and factories. Simulation gets smarter; physical products still need engineers.
What the job is
Mechanical engineers design, build and maintain machines and systems: engines, vehicles, factory equipment, air conditioning, robots and medical devices.
O*NET's task list for mechanical engineers includes reading blueprints and technical drawings, investigating equipment failures to find the cause, and designing or maintaining mechanical systems.
How AI is changing it
AI-assisted design and simulation can test many options quickly, and factories use more sensors and automation.
Someone still has to understand why a part failed, make it work in the real world, and keep production running. Engineers who combine mechanics with electronics and software are especially useful.
AI-resistance outlook
HighHigh AI-resistance
The ILO finds low exposure for mechanical engineers, and the WEF expects net growth, with fast growth in related fields such as robotics and electric vehicles.
What "High" means here: Most of the core work needs a person present, human judgement or trust, and the sources we checked show low exposure to generative AI. AI will still change parts of the job.
Why we say this
- The ILO's 2025 index places Mechanical Engineers in its 'Not Exposed' group. Source: ILO Working Paper 140, Generative AI and Jobs: A Refined Global Index of Occupational Exposure (2025), Table A1.
- The WEF's job outlook shows projected net growth for Mechanical Engineers to 2030. Source: World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025, Figure 2.3.
- The WEF lists Autonomous and Electric Vehicle Specialists among the 15 fastest-growing jobs. Source: World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025, Figure 2.2.
No one can promise how any career will look in ten or twenty years. This is our reading of the sources above, not a forecast for your child.
Skills to build in school
- Physics and mathematics (PCM).
- Taking things apart and putting them back together.
- Robotics clubs, model-making and basic programming.
- Drawing and reading technical diagrams.
- Patience with problems that do not work the first time.
Exams and paths in India
JEE Main and JEE Advanced
For B.Tech or B.E. in mechanical engineering at NITs, IIITs, IITs and many other colleges.
Official site: jeemain.nta.nic.in
State tests and diplomas
State engineering entrance tests, or a polytechnic diploma after Class 10 with lateral entry into a degree.
ITI trades
For a hands-on route, ITI trades such as Fitter or Mechanic, under the Directorate General of Training.
Official site: dgt.gov.in
Rules, dates and eligibility change every year. Always check the official site before applying.
Who tends to enjoy this work
O*NET gives mechanical engineers the interest code RIC:
- Realistic: hands-on work with tools, machines or the physical world.
- Investigative: working with ideas, research and problems that need thinking through.
- Conventional: organised work with data, records and clear procedures.
These are O*NET's Holland interest types for the occupation, from its Mechanical Engineers page. DharmaCode's own quiz and report do not use this test.

Ask the DharmaCode Agent
Questions parents ask about this career. These answers were written in advance by the DharmaCode team in the voice of a DharmaCode Agent. They are not generated live.
- Is mechanical engineering losing out to computer science?
- DharmaCode AgentIt is less fashionable, but the ILO places mechanical engineers in its 'Not Exposed' group and the WEF expects net growth. For a child who loves machines, it is a strong choice.
- Should my child learn coding too?
- DharmaCode AgentYes, some. Modern machines are full of sensors and software. A mechanical engineer who can program is more versatile.
- What about electric vehicles and robotics?
- DharmaCode AgentThe WEF lists Autonomous and Electric Vehicle Specialists among the fastest-growing jobs, and both fields need mechanical engineers alongside electrical and software engineers.
- What can my child do outside class?
- DharmaCode AgentJoin or start a robotics club, build kits, repair a bicycle, or visit a workshop. Ekalavya-style practice counts for a lot.
- Is there a route without JEE?
- DharmaCode AgentYes: state entrance tests, polytechnic diplomas with lateral entry, and ITI trades for hands-on roles.
A lesson from the texts
"there he made a clay-image of Drona, and began to worship it respectfully, as if it was his real preceptor, and practised weapons before it with the most rigid regularity."
Ekalavya had no seat in the class, so he built his own and practised daily. Mechanical skill grows the same way: through hours of hands-on practice, often outside the syllabus.
