Architect
Designing spaces people live and work in. AI makes images fast; clients, sites and approvals still need an architect.
What the job is
Architects design buildings and spaces, from homes and schools to hospitals and city layouts. They turn a client's needs, a budget, the site and the building rules into drawings that can actually be built.
O*NET's task list for architects includes meeting clients to discuss drawings, preparing designs with computer-aided tools, and observing construction on site to check it follows the plans.
How AI is changing it
Image generators can produce attractive concept pictures in seconds, and design software can test layouts, daylight and energy use quickly.
A beautiful image is not a buildable, legal, affordable building. Understanding clients, sites, materials, codes and contractors remains the architect's job, along with signing the drawings.
AI-resistance outlook
MediumMedium AI-resistance
The ILO finds limited exposure overall, and the WEF projects net growth. Early concept and drafting work is changing quickly, so the skills that get hired are shifting.
What "Medium" means here: AI can already help with a fair share of the work, but the core of judgement, responsibility or hands-on craft stays with people.
Why we say this
- The ILO's 2025 index places Building Architects in its 'Minimal Exposure' group: some tasks show moderate automation potential, but overall exposure remains limited. - The WEF's job outlook shows projected net growth for Architects and Surveyors to 2030. Source: World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025, Figure 2.3.
- O*NET's task list includes client meetings and on-site observation as well as drawing and design. Source: O*NET OnLine, Architects, Except Landscape and Naval (17-1011.00).
No one can promise how any career will look in ten or twenty years. This is our reading of the sources above, not a forecast for your child.
Skills to build in school
- Drawing by hand: sketching buildings, rooms and streets.
- Mathematics and physics.
- Noticing how people use spaces: where they gather, where they get stuck.
- Basic 3D modelling software.
- Explaining and defending a design to someone who disagrees.

Who tends to enjoy this work
O*NET gives architects, except landscape and naval the interest code RCA:
- Realistic: hands-on work with tools, machines or the physical world.
- Conventional: organised work with data, records and clear procedures.
- Artistic: creating, designing and expressing ideas.
These are O*NET's Holland interest types for the occupation, from its Architects, Except Landscape and Naval page. DharmaCode's own quiz and report do not use this test.

Ask the DharmaCode Agent
Questions parents ask about this career. These answers were written in advance by the DharmaCode team in the voice of a DharmaCode Agent. They are not generated live.
- AI can make building images now. Is architecture still worth it?
- DharmaCode AgentImages are the easy part. The ILO places building architects in its 'Minimal Exposure' group, because most of the job is turning ideas into something legal, safe and buildable. Your child should learn to use these tools, not fear them.
- Does my child need to be good at drawing?
- DharmaCode AgentIt helps a lot, and NATA tests drawing and aptitude. Drawing improves with practice, so a sketchbook habit from Class 9 is valuable.
- Which subjects are needed?
- DharmaCode AgentMathematics is required for B.Arch. Physics and chemistry are usually part of the requirement too. Check the current NATA and JEE Main rules.
- How is architecture different from civil engineering?
- DharmaCode AgentArchitects focus on how a building looks, feels and works for people. Civil engineers focus on making the structure and infrastructure safe and sound. They work together on most projects.
- Is the course hard?
- DharmaCode AgentIt is long and demanding, with many late nights on design projects. It suits a child who enjoys making things and can take criticism of their work.
A lesson from the texts
"One's duty, though defective, is better than another's duty well performed. Performing the duty prescribed by nature, one does not incur sin."
Architecture suits a particular blend of art and engineering. When that blend is a child's nature, the long five-year degree feels like their own work rather than a burden.
