Doctor

Diagnosis, treatment and trust. AI is becoming a tool in the clinic, not the person in the white coat.

High AI-resistance

What the job is

A doctor examines patients, works out what is wrong, and decides on treatment. Some work as general physicians who see a wide range of problems; others specialise after further study, in areas such as surgery, paediatrics or psychiatry.

O*NET's description of family medicine physicians lists tasks such as ordering and interpreting tests, prescribing treatment, and explaining procedures and test results to patients. Much of the day is spent talking with people who are worried, and with nurses and other staff.

How AI is changing it

AI tools can already help with parts of the work: reading scans, drafting notes, flagging drug interactions and summarising long records. These are real changes, and young doctors will be expected to use such tools well and check them carefully.

What stays with the doctor is the examination, the judgement about a particular patient, the conversation about risk, and the responsibility for the decision. Patients, families and the law expect a qualified person to own that call.

AI-resistance outlook

HighHigh AI-resistance

The core of the job is physical examination, judgement and responsibility for a patient, and the sources we checked place it among the occupations least exposed to generative AI. AI will still change how doctors work day to day.

What "High" means here: Most of the core work needs a person present, human judgement or trust, and the sources we checked show low exposure to generative AI. AI will still change parts of the job.

Why we say this

No one can promise how any career will look in ten or twenty years. This is our reading of the sources above, not a forecast for your child.

Skills to build in school

  • Biology, chemistry and physics in Class 11 and 12 (the PCB combination), studied for understanding, not only for marks.
  • Reading long, dense material and remembering it.
  • Talking calmly with people who are scared or upset. Volunteering at a clinic or hospital, where allowed, helps.
  • Stamina and steady study habits over many years.
  • Basic comfort with digital tools, and the habit of checking a tool's answer instead of trusting it blindly.

Exams and paths in India

  • NEET UG

The national entrance test for MBBS, BDS and other undergraduate medical courses in India, conducted by the National Testing Agency.

    Official site: neet.nta.nic.in

  • MBBS

The undergraduate medical degree, followed by a compulsory internship. Medical education is regulated by the National Medical Commission.

    Official site: nmc.org.in

  • Specialisation

Becoming a specialist needs a postgraduate course after MBBS, which takes several more years.

Rules, dates and eligibility change every year. Always check the official site before applying.

Who tends to enjoy this work

O*NET gives family medicine physicians the interest code SI:

  • Social: helping, teaching, advising or caring for people.
  • Investigative: working with ideas, research and problems that need thinking through.

These are O*NET's Holland interest types for the occupation, from its Family Medicine Physicians page. DharmaCode's own quiz and report do not use this test.

Halo, the DharmaCode Agents guide
Will AI replace doctors by the time my child qualifies?
Halo, the DharmaCode Agents guide
DharmaCode AgentNo one can promise what any job will look like in ten years. The sources we checked suggest doctors are among the least exposed occupations: the ILO's 2025 index puts medical practitioners in its 'Not Exposed' group. What is more likely is that AI becomes a standard tool in the clinic, and doctors who use it well will have an advantage.
Halo, the DharmaCode Agents guide
My child likes biology but is scared of NEET. Is medicine still worth trying?
Halo, the DharmaCode Agents guide
DharmaCode AgentFear of a hard exam is normal and is not a reason on its own to drop a path. The better questions are whether your child enjoys the subject, can sustain years of study, and cares about patients. If the answers are yes, prepare seriously and also keep a second path in view, such as nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy or biological sciences.
Halo, the DharmaCode Agents guide
Which subjects should my child choose in Class 11?
Halo, the DharmaCode Agents guide
DharmaCode AgentPhysics, chemistry and biology are needed for NEET UG. Many students also keep mathematics, which leaves engineering and data paths open if plans change.
Halo, the DharmaCode Agents guide
What should my child learn about AI to be ready?
Halo, the DharmaCode Agents guide
DharmaCode AgentNot coding for its own sake. The useful habit is to treat any AI answer as a second opinion to be checked against evidence. Encourage your child to read about how tools are used in medicine and where they make mistakes.
Halo, the DharmaCode Agents guide
Is being a doctor only about marks?
Halo, the DharmaCode Agents guide
DharmaCode AgentMarks open the door. After that, the job is about patience, clear explanation and steady judgement under pressure. These can be practised at school: in group projects, in caring for a family member, or in volunteering.

A lesson from the texts

"(Every) man intent on his own respective duties obtains perfection"
Bhagavad Gita 18.45, translated by K. T. Telang (1882). Public domain.

Medicine is the clearest example of going deep into one kind of work for many years. A child who wants this should know the road is long, and that the depth is the point.
