Nurse
Hands-on care that the WEF expects to be one of the largest-growing jobs to 2030.
What the job is
Nurses care for patients around the clock. They give medicines, monitor patients, record changes, and coordinate with doctors and the rest of the care team. Many move into specialised areas such as critical care, paediatrics, community health or teaching.
O*NET's task list for registered nurses includes recording vital signs, administering medications and watching for side effects, and teaching patients and families about their health.
How AI is changing it
Paperwork is where AI helps most: charting, handover notes and reminders. Monitoring devices also send more data to the nurse than before.
The bedside work, noticing that a patient looks wrong, comforting a frightened family, acting fast in an emergency, needs a person in the room.
AI-resistance outlook
HighHigh AI-resistance
Demand for nurses is expected to grow, and most of the job is hands-on care that generative AI does not do.
What "High" means here: Most of the core work needs a person present, human judgement or trust, and the sources we checked show low exposure to generative AI. AI will still change parts of the job.
Why we say this
- The WEF lists Nursing Professionals among the jobs with the largest expected growth in absolute numbers between 2025 and 2030. Source: World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025, Figure 2.4.
- The WEF links this to aging populations, which drive growth in healthcare jobs such as nursing professionals. Source: World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025, Key findings.
- The ILO's 2025 index places Nursing Professionals in its 'Not Exposed' group. Source: ILO Working Paper 140, Generative AI and Jobs: A Refined Global Index of Occupational Exposure (2025), Table A1.
No one can promise how any career will look in ten or twenty years. This is our reading of the sources above, not a forecast for your child.

Who tends to enjoy this work
O*NET gives registered nurses the interest code SCI:
- Social: helping, teaching, advising or caring for people.
- Conventional: organised work with data, records and clear procedures.
- Investigative: working with ideas, research and problems that need thinking through.
These are O*NET's Holland interest types for the occupation, from its Registered Nurses page. DharmaCode's own quiz and report do not use this test.
Closest DharmaCode pattern: The Healer.

Ask the DharmaCode Agent
Questions parents ask about this career. These answers were written in advance by the DharmaCode team in the voice of a DharmaCode Agent. They are not generated live.
- Is nursing a good career choice in the age of AI?
- DharmaCode AgentThe sources we checked are encouraging. The WEF expects Nursing Professionals to be among the largest-growing jobs by 2030, and the ILO's 2025 index places them in its 'Not Exposed' group. Nothing is guaranteed, but this is one of the steadier options we looked at.
- My son wants to be a nurse. Is that unusual?
- DharmaCode AgentLess than it used to be, and the work suits anyone who is caring, steady and practical. Hospitals need nurses of every gender.
- Does my child need NEET for nursing?
- DharmaCode AgentIt depends on the college. Some institutions use NEET UG scores and others run their own or state tests. Look at the admission notice of each college your child is considering for the current year.
- What can my child do now, in Class 9 or 10?
- DharmaCode AgentTake biology seriously, learn first aid, and if possible spend time around care work, for example helping an older relative. These show whether the day-to-day reality of care suits them.
- Will my child be stuck at the bedside forever?
- DharmaCode AgentNo. Nursing leads to specialist clinical roles, teaching, research, public health and hospital management. Many senior healthcare leaders started as nurses.
A lesson from the texts
"Your business is with action alone; not by any means with fruit. Let not the fruit of action be your motive (to action). Let not your attachment be (fixed) on inaction."
Nurses do the work in front of them, shift after shift, often without thanks and without seeing how a patient's story ends. The Gita's teaching on work done for its own sake fits this calling closely.
