Psychologist
Helping people understand their minds. The relationship is the treatment, and that stays human.
What the job is
Psychologists help people with emotional, behavioural and mental health difficulties. Clinical psychologists assess and treat conditions; counselling psychologists help people through stress, choices and relationships; others work in schools, workplaces or research.
O*NET's task list for clinical and counselling psychologists includes assessing a patient's risk of harm, counselling individuals and families through crises, and writing session notes and treatment plans.
How AI is changing it
AI can help with note-taking, scoring questionnaires and finding research quickly. Some apps offer self-help exercises, and psychologists will need to understand what these can and cannot do.
Building trust with a person in distress, judging risk, and adapting the treatment as someone changes remain human work. A good psychologist also knows when a chatbot is the wrong tool.
AI-resistance outlook
HighHigh AI-resistance
Most of the work is a human relationship and clinical judgement. The ILO finds that only some of the job's tasks are exposed to generative AI, and the WEF expects counselling roles to grow.
What "High" means here: Most of the core work needs a person present, human judgement or trust, and the sources we checked show low exposure to generative AI. AI will still change parts of the job.
Why we say this
- The ILO's 2025 index places Psychologists in Gradient 1, its lowest exposed group: some tasks have elevated automation potential, but the occupation as a whole relies strongly on tasks with low automation potential. - The WEF lists Social Work and Counselling Professionals among the jobs with the largest expected growth in absolute numbers between 2025 and 2030. Source: World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025, Figure 2.4.

Who tends to enjoy this work
O*NET gives clinical and counseling psychologists the interest code SI:
- Social: helping, teaching, advising or caring for people.
- Investigative: working with ideas, research and problems that need thinking through.
These are O*NET's Holland interest types for the occupation, from its Clinical and Counseling Psychologists page. DharmaCode's own quiz and report do not use this test.

Ask the DharmaCode Agent
Questions parents ask about this career. These answers were written in advance by the DharmaCode team in the voice of a DharmaCode Agent. They are not generated live.
- Will AI chatbots replace therapists?
- DharmaCode AgentChatbots can offer general support and exercises, and some people find them helpful. They cannot take clinical responsibility, judge risk in the room, or build the kind of trust that therapy depends on. The ILO places psychologists in its lowest exposed group, and we would describe the role as changing at the edges rather than disappearing.
- Is psychology only for students from the arts stream?
- DharmaCode AgentNo. Many universities accept students from any stream. Biology helps with the brain and health side, and mathematics helps with statistics, which every psychologist uses.
- How long does it take to become a clinical psychologist?
- DharmaCode AgentSeveral years: an undergraduate degree, a master's, and then an RCI-recognised professional course and registration. Plan for the long route and check RCI's current rules when your child is closer to it.
- My daughter is the friend everyone talks to. Is that a sign?
- DharmaCode AgentIt can be. Being a good listener is a strong start. The work also needs comfort with science and research, and the ability to hear hard things without carrying them home every night. Talking to a practising psychologist is a good next step.
- What is the risk of this path?
- DharmaCode AgentThe training is long, and jobs after only a bachelor's degree are limited. It suits a child who is willing to study for several years and who wants this kind of work for its own sake.
A lesson from the texts
"my limbs droop down; my mouth is quite dried up; a tremor comes on my body; and my hairs stand on end; the Gandiva (bow) slips from my hand; my skin burns intensely. I am unable, too, to stand up; my mind whirls round, as it were"
The Gita opens with a strong man undone by distress, and it describes his body and mind with great precision. Before any advice, Arjuna's state is named and heard. That is where good psychological help starts too.
