Physiotherapist
Hands-on recovery work for injuries, surgery and long-term conditions. The hands are the job.
What the job is
Physiotherapists help people move again after injury, surgery, stroke or long illness, and help athletes and older adults stay active. They work in hospitals, clinics, sports teams, schools and patients' homes.
O*NET's task list for physical therapists includes designing treatment programmes, administering manual exercises, massage or traction, and teaching patients and families exercises to continue at home.
How AI is changing it
Apps and sensors can track exercises at home and send progress data to the therapist, and AI can help draft notes and plans.
Assessing how a body moves, adjusting a treatment by touch, and motivating a tired patient are done in person.
AI-resistance outlook
HighHigh AI-resistance
Most of the work is physical and in person, and the ILO finds limited exposure to generative AI.
What "High" means here: Most of the core work needs a person present, human judgement or trust, and the sources we checked show low exposure to generative AI. AI will still change parts of the job.
Why we say this
- The ILO's 2025 index places Physiotherapists in its 'Minimal Exposure' group, where overall exposure to generative AI remains limited. Source: ILO Working Paper 140, Generative AI and Jobs: A Refined Global Index of Occupational Exposure (2025), Table A1.
- O*NET's task list is dominated by examination, hands-on treatment and coaching patients. Source: O*NET OnLine, Physical Therapists (29-1123.00).
- The WEF says aging populations drive growth in healthcare jobs. Source: World Economic Forum, Future of Jobs Report 2025, Key findings.
No one can promise how any career will look in ten or twenty years. This is our reading of the sources above, not a forecast for your child.
Skills to build in school
- Biology, especially the human body, plus physics for how forces and movement work.
- Sport, yoga or dance, which build a feel for movement.
- Patience and encouragement: recovery is slow.
- Clear explanations for patients of every age.
Exams and paths in India
Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT)
An undergraduate degree after Class 12 with physics, chemistry and biology, usually including a supervised internship. Admission is through state, university or institution tests, and some colleges use NEET UG scores. Check each college's current rule.
Official site: NEET UG
Specialisation
A Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) in areas such as sports, neurology, orthopaedics or cardiopulmonary care.
Rules, dates and eligibility change every year. Always check the official site before applying.
Who tends to enjoy this work
O*NET gives physical therapists the interest code SIR:
- Social: helping, teaching, advising or caring for people.
- Investigative: working with ideas, research and problems that need thinking through.
- Realistic: hands-on work with tools, machines or the physical world.
These are O*NET's Holland interest types for the occupation, from its Physical Therapists page. DharmaCode's own quiz and report do not use this test.

Ask the DharmaCode Agent
Questions parents ask about this career. These answers were written in advance by the DharmaCode team in the voice of a DharmaCode Agent. They are not generated live.
- Is physiotherapy a respected career in India?
- DharmaCode AgentIt is growing in recognition, especially in sports, orthopaedics and elder care. Respect follows skill, and a well-trained physiotherapist is in demand in many settings.
- Can AI apps replace a physiotherapist?
- DharmaCode AgentApps can remind and track, but assessment and hands-on treatment need a trained person. The ILO places physiotherapists in its 'Minimal Exposure' group.
- My child loves sport but is average in studies. Is this a fit?
- DharmaCode AgentA love of sport and movement is a real advantage here. The course still needs steady work in biology and anatomy, so encourage consistent study habits from Class 11.
- Does my child need NEET?
- DharmaCode AgentSome colleges use NEET UG scores and others use their own or state tests. Check the admission notices of the colleges you are considering.
- What is the hardest part of the job?
- DharmaCode AgentPatience. Progress is slow and patients can lose heart. A physiotherapist needs to stay encouraging for weeks or months.
A lesson from the texts
"(A man) should elevate his self by his self; he should not debase his self"
A physiotherapist can guide, but the patient has to do the lifting, one repetition at a time. The verse on raising oneself by one's own effort is what a good therapist helps people live.
