Career options after 12th Science: PCM and PCB routes, exams and degrees
By Gaurav Channagiri · · 9 min read
The short answer: 12th Science opens the widest range of routes, but which ones depends on whether your child took Mathematics (PCM), Biology (PCB), or both. PCM leads to engineering, architecture, technology, data and the physical sciences, mainly through JEE. PCB leads to medicine, nursing, allied health, agriculture and the life sciences, mainly through NEET. Both lead to pharmacy, research degrees and the many courses admitted through CUET-UG. Choose by the daily work your child enjoys, not by the size of the exam.
Which entrance exams matter after 12th Science?
| Exam | Leads to | Class 12 subjects needed | | --- | --- | --- | | JEE Main (NTA) | B.E./B.Tech at NITs, IIITs and others; also B.Arch and B.Planning papers | PCM | | JEE Advanced | IITs | PCM, a place in the top 2.5 lakh of JEE Main, and at most two attempts in consecutive years | | NEET-UG (NTA) | MBBS, BDS, AYUSH courses and more | PCB | | CUET-UG (NTA) | BSc and other degrees at central universities; also agriculture seats through CUET (ICAR-UG) | Subjects must match those passed in Class 12 | | NATA (Council of Architecture) | B.Arch | Physics and Mathematics compulsory | | BITSAT (BITS Pilani) | BITS degrees | PCM for all courses, PCB for B.Pharm only; 75% in PCM or PCB with 60% in each | | IISER Aptitude Test | BS-MS research degrees at the IISERs | Science subjects in Class 12; check the current IISER admissions rules |
Two numbers show the scale. About 23 lakh candidates registered for NEET-UG in 2026 (PIB), and 56,880 of about 1.8 lakh JEE Advanced candidates qualified (JEE Advanced 2026). These exams are worth attempting, but a good plan always includes routes beyond them.
What can my child do after 12th PCM?
- Engineering and technology: B.E. or B.Tech through JEE Main, JEE Advanced, BITSAT and state exams.
- Architecture and planning: B.Arch through NATA or the JEE Main architecture paper.
- Computing and data: B.Sc Computer Science, BCA, data science and statistics.
- Physical sciences and research: B.Sc Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics, or a BS-MS at an IISER.
- Defence: the National Defence Academy, where the Air Force and Navy wings require Physics and Mathematics.
- Commerce and law remain open: CA, economics, BBA and five-year law degrees accept PCM students.
What can my child do after 12th PCB?
- Medicine and dentistry: MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses (BAMS, BHMS and others) through NEET-UG.
- Nursing: B.Sc Nursing, which needs Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English in Class 12 (Indian Nursing Council).
- Allied health: physiotherapy, occupational therapy, lab and imaging technology. Some of these now admit through NEET; check each state and university.
- Pharmacy: B.Pharm accepts PCB, as at BITS Pilani.
- Agriculture and veterinary science: through CUET (ICAR-UG) and state exams.
- Life sciences and research: B.Sc Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, or a BS-MS at an IISER.
- Psychology, law and management remain open through their own entrance routes.
A PCB student without Mathematics cannot take B.Arch, because the Council of Architecture requires Physics and Mathematics in Class 12.
Are there good options without JEE or NEET?
Yes, many. B.Sc and other degrees at central universities admit through CUET-UG. Pharmacy, nursing, computing, design, hotel management, law and management all have their own routes. A strong B.Sc followed by a master's is a respected path into research, data and teaching. If your child is preparing for JEE or NEET, agree a second route early, so a single exam day never decides everything.
How do I know which route suits my child?
- Builds, fixes and asks how things work: engineering or architecture.
- Loves patterns, numbers and puzzles: computing, data, mathematics or physics.
- Is drawn to the body, health and caring for people: medicine, nursing or allied health.
- Asks why, reads beyond the syllabus and enjoys experiments: research through a B.Sc or BS-MS.
AI is changing these careers unevenly: routine coding and reporting are being automated, while hands-on care and complex judgement are not. See the doctor, software engineer, nurse and architect career pages.

Frequently asked questions
What are the best career options after 12th Science?
Engineering, technology and architecture after PCM; medicine, nursing and allied health after PCB; and research, pharmacy, agriculture and many degree courses after either. The best option is the one whose daily work fits your child.
Which exams can my child take after 12th Science?
The main ones are JEE Main and JEE Advanced for engineering, NEET-UG for medicine, CUET-UG for central university degrees, NATA for architecture, BITSAT and the IISER Aptitude Test. Each has its own subject rules.
Can a PCB student do engineering?
Mostly not, because engineering admissions require Mathematics in Class 12. PCB students can still take B.Pharm, agriculture, biotechnology, life sciences and many other degrees.
Can a PCM student become a doctor?
NEET requires Biology. National Medical Commission rules allow a student to add Biology as an extra subject from a recognised board after Class 12, but it usually costs a year, so decide early if medicine is a real possibility.
What if my child does not clear JEE or NEET?
There are many good routes through CUET-UG, state exams and private universities, including B.Sc degrees that lead to research, data and teaching. Plan a second route from the start.
